Eating on Laminate
King James School in Knaresborough is now enjoying an innovatively designed dining-hall which features Straticolor multi-colour core laminate from Abet Ltd.
The brief for Baily Design was to develop a stimulating and unusual theme within the limited space available. Chris Baily has achieved this with specially designed tables using textured Abet finishes for the tables and Straticolor multi-colour core laminate to create the innovative weather symbols. These have been routered out of the laminate to expose the different colours within the core. The result is an exciting 3-dimensional surface which complements the bright and bold styling of the room.
The unusual arrangement of refectory tables, benching and bar stools maximises the available space and encourages a high throughput of children. As Chris Baily explains, 'We needed to come up with a concept which was both funky and sociable. We wanted to steer clear of the traditional staid table and chair arrangement and so came up with this modern variation of refectory seating. The result is both bright and stylised, providing a fun and sociable space where children can interact.'

Digital Print hits the bullseye
Another unusual and interesting application using Abet’s Digital Print technology has been completed in the historic Archery Guild in Bruges, Belgium.
The bar in the prestige clubhouse of the ‘Royal Head of Guilds of St. Sebastian’ is clad with digitally printed laminate decorated with distinctive medieval Coats-of-Arms and heraldic shields which emphasise the Guild’s existence from the Middle Ages. King Charles II became a member of the Guild in 1656, before his succession to the throne, and the Royal Family continue to be lifetime members.
The scheme was designed by architects Int. Arch. Vermeersch and installed by Bissegem-based company Rigole.
This unusual historic application highlights the benefits of Digital Print technology and shows how it can offer architects and designers unparalleled freedom to reproduce and realise their most creative ideas and designs in high pressure laminate.
Although still a relatively new concept, Digital Print is having a major impact on the laminate industry as a whole and is revitalising the use of laminate in interior design for many different applications.

Shopping on laminate
Abet’s Serie Metalli 877 high pressure laminate in Morbida and Millerighie finishes have been used to create an impressive and distinctive area within the new House of Fraser store in Birmingham.
Designed and specified by Kinnersley Kent Design, the metallic laminate adds a clean ultra-modern feel to the ‘Label Lover’ section – a section devoted to prestige designer brands within menswear. Serie Metalli is a popular choice for this kind of application where a stylish and fashionable finish is of paramount importance to complement the products it houses.
Mick Kent, a Partner at Kinnersley Kent Design says, “We were appointed by House of Fraser to design a new concept to refurbish this prestigious Birmingham store. The departments are broken down in to distinct areas, appealing to customer’s requirements across different product types. In the Menswear department we created an area call Label Lover to house fashion brands. The scheme uses two types of Abet metallic laminates to emphasise the branded offer through bright clean lines, creating a classy look. We chose to use Abet because it is a great product, it looks like real metal and it is great to work with.”
