Laminates Excite
Translucent high pressure laminate from Abet’s Diafos collection has been used to stunning effect at Cable London’s recently-refurbished offices.
The doors and underpanels of the four washrooms have been clad in this unique and striking translucent laminate which is complemented by powder-coated aluminium framework to give clean and crisp lines.
The washrooms were built by Decra Plastics which specified the Diafos due to its distinctive properties. Designer Kevin Grieve explains, “We decided to use Diafos laminate from Abet because it is a unique product and a designers’ dream. This translucent material gives the impression of glass but without the inherent problems associated with traditional glazing such as lack of privacy, continual maintenance and safety considerations such as weight. The inherent translucence of the laminate creates a warm feel and when combined with the aluminium framework, the finished effect is stunning.”
In addition to a wide range of plain colours, Diafos is also available with three-dimensional translucent effects which give surfaces a soft feel without looking flat and lifeless.

Laminates Create a Scene
Another application using large-scale images with Abet’s innovative digital printing technique is creating a stir at the Harlequin Shopping Centre in Watford.
As part of the centre’s ongoing refurbishment, Designers Landmark Architecture were asked to come up with a scheme for the baby-changing area and public washrooms to complement a jungle scene in the crèche area. An underwater scene drawn by the 6 year old daughter of one of the directors at Landmark was used as the basis for the design.
Because of the high volume of people and the associated wear and tear, high pressure laminate from Abet was selected as being the most durable and maintenance-free solution.
Tony Braimbridge from Landmark explains, “We considered several different ways of reproducing the underwater scene onto the wall. However due to its location and heavy use, we wanted a material which would not fade and which could not be easily damaged. This ruled out materials such as wallpaper in favour of Abet’s digitally printed laminate which provided the perfect answer. The material is very durable, is maintenance-free, gives a lovely crisp reproduction and sharp image as well as a very pleasant finish”.

Laminates and Retail Therapy
Piccadilly Jim’ is a new film directed by John McKay. Filmed on the Isle of Man, it stars Sam Rockwell, Brenda Blethyn, Tom Wilkinson and newcomers Oberflex and Abet.
Zebrano and Canadian Maple real wood laminates from Oberflex, and high pressure laminate from Abet’s Serie Metalli Collection, have both been used to dramatic effect on the film sets. The laminates have been used to help give a rich, vibrant and luxurious feel to the film which replicates London in the 1930’s.
Emily Woods, director of Bellwood Media, comments, “We approached Abet for the laminate as we needed to create a very defined series of sets but needed them to be both lightweight so it could be easily moved and durable to resist damage when being transported. The decision to use laminate with a real wood finish provided us with the perfect solution.’
Oberflex is exclusively available in the UK from Abet. Available in a large number of wood finishes, it is suitable for a wide range of uses internally and most horizontal or vertical applications.
