Laminates Shine at Eurostar

Translucent high pressure laminate from Abet’s Diafos collection has been used to stunning effect at Cable London’s recently-refurbished offices.

The doors and underpanels of the four washrooms have been clad in this unique and striking translucent laminate which is complemented by powder-coated aluminium framework to give clean and crisp lines.

The washrooms were built by Decra Plastics which specified the Diafos due to its distinctive properties. Designer Kevin Grieve explains, “We decided to use Diafos laminate from Abet because it is a unique product and a designers’ dream. This translucent material gives the impression of glass but without the inherent problems associated with traditional glazing such as lack of privacy, continual maintenance and safety considerations such as weight. The inherent translucence of the laminate creates a warm feel and when combined with the aluminium framework, the finished effect is stunning.” In addition to a wide range of plain colours, Diafos is also available with three-dimensional translucent effects which give surfaces a soft feel without looking flat and lifeless.

Laminates Perform at Night

Nightclubs are among the most fashion-led of places. Here, designers need to select materials which are inherently attractive and which perform exceptionally well. This is why pressure laminates are often favoured over traditional materials. Not only will they resist heavy use and abuse but the range of colours, textures and effects available is almost limitless. For these reasons, one of the most popular laminates used is the Serie Metalli range.

Dukes Genesis Nightclub in Chelmsford, for example, has completed its second major refurbishment in 20 years. Here Ashley Rowland designers have used Serie Metalli laminates for the five bar fronts, each with a different colour identity. Elsewhere, the laminate has been used for the vertical surfaces of the reception desk, DJ areas and in the toilets. Another example is the new Atantis Nightclub in Croydon. Here, designers Esquisse (www.esquisse.co.uk) have used Serie Metalli's mottled silver laminate to create sparkling, high performance and easily maintained bar fronts.

The Serie Metalli range is particularly suitable because the metallic finishes combine with a chic high-tech quality to give shimmering effects which are enhanced by the ever-changing lighting. The range comprises over 50 high pressure laminates with real metal surfaces protected by a lacquering and anodising process. The choice for designers extends across silver, grey, gold and copper. Each has multi-reflective ribbed and mottled textures to complement with the sharp acid- like yellows, greens and blues that also distinguish this Series.

Laminates Feed The Senses

Oberflex Real Wood laminate, supplied by Abet, has been used to stunning effect at Hakkasan’s ‘Busaba Eathai’ restaurant in London’s Store Street. The high pressure laminate is used to clad the walls and ceilings of this innovative Thai restaurant concept by French designer Christian Liaigre.

Over 250 sheets of high pressure laminate with real Teak finish create a striking and dramatic interior which exudes a wonderfully authentic feel to the restaurant.

Marcus Burley, of executive architects Denton, Corker, Marshall, says “We specified Oberflex from Abet because we knew it would be the ideal product for this project. We needed a rich finish which had all the beauty of real wood but the inherent strength and durability of high pressure laminate. Oberflex is a perfect mix of the two and Teak from the new Millennium Discovery range is a perfect species for this interior.”

Oberflex is exclusively available in the UK from Abet. It is suitable for a wide range of internal applications uses for all kinds of horizontal and vertical applications.
